I used to have Fantastico, now I don’t. I’ve recently moved over to Mosso as my web host, and they don’t have the standard Cpanel functionality, let alone the one click install for Wordpress that Fantastico affords. Which has been… frustrating.
You see, I probably do at least one Wordpress install per week, either for a client, or for myself for my latest experiment in getting-rich-quick-that-never-works. (As an aside, for all you Wordpress developers out there regularly showing clients plugins, theme designs, wireframes etc.. install Wordpress MU on a single domain and use that to create client test sites to demo your stuff. Saved me hours!)
And as I don’t have Fantastico, that usually means creating the domain, creating a database, creating a user, downloading the latest version of Wordpress, unzipping it, ftp-ing it my new domain, editing and uploading wp-config.php and then creating the Wordpress site in the browser. Arse-ache big time, and takes at least 20 mins (and if you’re on a crappy internet connection it could take hours).
So I was excited to see on Twitter a link for EasyWP, a single php script that, upon upload, will download and install the latest version of WP an create your dbase for you.
Which is great if you’re not hosted with Mosso, who’s dbase system doesn’t work with the php file. ANS I am. So I got onto Mosso and the very kind chat agent (they have the best support of any web service I know BTW, immediate, knowledgeable, friendly, and forgiving when inevitably, the error is my fault) told me he’d go and look into it, and see whether it could be used with Mosso. And instead, he found me an alternative.
Sadly you still need to manually create a dbase and user, but having done so, you can simply run this php script, type in the necessaries, and your Wordpress install is ready to rock. This will save me at least an hour a week, and for that, Trey from Mosso customer support is man of the month.
How to install Wordpress really quickly without Fantastico
