One of the frustrations I initially had with WordPress when I began publishing with it was that often I wanted to create pages without adding them to the main page navigation. Out of the box, with most themes this is impossible to do. However, I then found the fabulous hide pages plugin from Instinct, which upon install gives you a ‘page visibility’ option in the ‘add new page’ interface.

This function is particularly handy when it comes to SEO, as it allows you to create SEO optimised pages, but ‘hide’ them away from your main page navigation. If you then deep link to these pages with your website, they’re likely to be found by search engines, but less likely to be found by website visitors. For example, I created this ‘gite website designer’ page to improve my ranking for the search term ‘gite website designer’. I already have another page on my website called ‘gite website design’, so the information in the ‘gite website designer’ page is supplementary, but ensures that my website ranks highly for both search terms.
I’m not advocating creating pages stuffed with gobbledegook here, just well crafted pages for specific search terms you want to be found against.

This is just what I have been looking for – a way of including pages on my site but without having them on the page navigation bar. And to see that it can be used for enhancing SEO – well that is just an added bonus for me.
As always great advice here.
Cheers
Thomas
