Translation plugin for WordPress

I’m a big believer in catering for foreign language visitors to holiday rental websites. Inevitably most of my client’s guests come from another country, and mostly speak a different language. Whilst many do understand english to an advanced level, those who don’t could be missed bookings.

With that in mind, I wrote on here about a clever little multi-lingual plugin I’ve been using on client sites a while back, but since installing it on a few sites I’ve encountered the WordPress developers nightmare… the White Screen Of Death.

For some reason, certain pages in the WordPress administration panel are inaccessible when the plugin is activated, meaning you have to de-activate it to edit, and then re-activate it once finished. Clumsy.

Additionally, I’ve not yet managed to get a response from the plugin development company as to what the problem might be, so I’ve been hunting round for an alternative.

The one I’ve found is actually pretty cool.. it’s called Transposh, and it can be installed directly from the WordPress Admin panel. Rather than just add multi-lingual capability to your site, it actually goes ahead and has a crack at the translations for you using Google translate. My tests show that the results are often way off the mark (and in many instances laughable),  but accurate enough for most visitors to get the gist of what you’re writing about.

But here’s the really clever bit… you can adjust the settings of the plugin to allow your visitors to correct the translations via the front end (kind of like Wikipedia). It’s up to you to decide whether users need to be registered to be able to do this (as there is of course a risk that without requiring registration to edit, people could maliciously edit the copy on your site without your knowledge ), but for me this is a massive potential benefit for holiday rental property owners.

Even if you decide to subsequently get a professional to do your web copy translation (I can help you with this btw), you can provide them with a login and then allow them to do the edit right on your site, and hopefully get a bit of a discount for having the translation 80% there!

I’ve installed the plugin on the Loire Atlantique website I’ve just launched, so head over there to check it out in action. I’d be interested to hear your feedback!
